Do nicotine pouches expire? Dates, storage and disposal

Nicotine pouches carry a date, but which date depends on the brand and the country. This guide covers what the date on a can means, what Swedish rules require on the packaging, how manufacturers and the FDA say pouches should be stored, and how to get rid of used and out-of-date pouches. It uses manufacturer and official sources only, listed at the end.

Do nicotine pouches expire?

Manufacturers print a date on the can after which they no longer stand behind the product's quality. ZYN's UK site says its pouches have a shelf life of up to 12 months from the date of production and that each can carries a best before date. ZYN's US FAQ says the best before date is printed on the bottom of every can.

ZYN's UK site says the date marks when pouches may begin to decline in quality, naming nicotine strength, flavour and the texture of the pouch, and that it doesn't recommend using pouches past it. Twelve months is ZYN's figure for ZYN. We found no official shelf-life figure that applies across brands.

What Swedish rules require on the can

In Sweden, Livsmedelsverket's regulations LIVSFS 2024:2 cover snus and snus-like products, which the agency says are sometimes called white snus. Under 12 §, a can supplied directly to consumers must show:

  • the net quantity in grams
  • the date of manufacture (tillverkningsdag)
  • storage instructions, if storage affects how long the product keeps
  • the name and address of the manufacturer, packer or seller, or its website or a Swedish phone number

How to read the dates

Under 15 §, that information must be in Swedish. So a can sold in Sweden shows when it was made, and the brand may print a best before date as well. Outside Sweden, the rules depend on the country, and the dates on ZYN's UK and US cans are what ZYN calls best before dates.

  • A manufacturing date tells you when the can was made. If the manufacturer publishes a shelf life, count forward from that date.
  • A best before date is set by the manufacturer as the end of the period it stands behind the product's quality.
  • If a can shows neither, check the manufacturer's website or contact the company named on the can.

Storage the manufacturers describe

ZYN's US FAQ says pouches don't need refrigerating and should be kept at normal room temperature and humidity, and that high temperatures or high humidity over long periods could reduce the product's performance. ZYN's UK site advises keeping the lid closed and the can somewhere cool and dry, away from heat and direct sunlight.

These describe how to keep the product in the condition the maker intends until the date on the can. Storage doesn't extend that date, and this page makes no claims about how a pouch performs. ZYN's UK site lists a drier or firmer pouch, or a change in colour or smell, as signs that pouches may be past their date or weren't stored correctly.

Keep pouches away from children and pets

The FDA reports that nicotine pouch exposure cases reported to U.S. poison centers rose steadily between April 2022 and March 2025. About 72% of the cases were children under 5, and almost all (99%) involved swallowing. The FDA says pouches can harm pets too. Its storage advice:

  • Keep containers out of reach and out of sight of children and pets, for example in a high cabinet that locks.
  • Close the container fully and use any child-resistant feature when you're not using it.
  • Keep pouches in their original container, since other containers may not be child resistant.
  • Ask family members and visitors who use pouches to store theirs safely as well.

If someone swallows a pouch

In Sweden, call 112 and ask for Giftinformation if it is urgent, or Giftinformationscentralen on 010-456 6700 in less urgent cases, both around the clock. In the US, the FDA directs you to the Poison Help Line on 1-800-222-1222, and to call 911 if a child can't wake up, has trouble breathing or has a seizure. Elsewhere, call your national poison centre or emergency number.

How to dispose of used and out-of-date pouches

ZYN's US FAQ says pouches are single use and should be disposed of in household or public waste in line with local regulations. ZYN's UK site says used pouches go in household waste and the can itself can be recycled. It also says not to put used pouches back with unused ones, and to use the compartment in the lid until you can put them in a bin.

Out-of-date pouches go the same way: ZYN's UK site says to dispose of them and recycle the can. Wherever you bin them, keep used pouches out of reach of children and pets, in line with the FDA's advice above.

What this page won't tell you

We don't say how long a pouch lasts in use or how to make one last longer, and we don't recommend products by shelf life. The dates and storage advice above are each manufacturer's own and apply to its products.
