Slim vs mini vs superslim nicotine pouches

Slim nicotine pouches and mini nicotine pouches are two of the formats you'll see on a can, with superslim as a third from some brands. The names describe the size and shape of the pouch, not how much nicotine it contains. This guide explains how the industry uses the names, shows the sizes and weights that two manufacturers publish on their own sites, and sets out why format and strength are separate things.

What the format names mean

Slim, mini and superslim are manufacturer and retailer terms for the size and shape of a pouch. In the sources we checked, they aren't defined by a regulator, so each brand decides what its own "slim" or "mini" means. Names also change over time. ZYN's UK site says its Regular pouches were "formerly known as 'ZYN Slim'", so a name you remember from one year can describe a different label the next.

In practice, mini is the smaller pouch, slim is the longer and fuller one, and superslim is a thinner cut again, sold by some brands. How much smaller depends on the brand, which is why the numbers below come from manufacturers' own pages and not from a general rule.

Slim nicotine pouches and mini nicotine pouches: published sizes

The two manufacturers below publish different kinds of figures, and neither set is an industry standard.

ZYN's UK site gives dimensions. Its Mini pouches are 13 mm wide and 28 mm long. Its Regular pouches, the ones formerly called Slim, are 14 mm wide and 34 mm long, which the brand describes as slightly larger. These are ZYN's figures for ZYN's products, and they don't describe other brands.

Skruf, a Swedish manufacturer, publishes weights instead of dimensions. On its product pages, a Super Slim product has a pouch weight of 0.55 g with 30 pouches per can, while its Slim Superwhite products have a pouch weight of 0.72 g with 24 per can. Weight isn't size, but it shows that superslim and slim differ in how much material is in a pouch, at least in Skruf's range.

  • ZYN Mini: 13 mm wide, 28 mm long (ZYN UK site).
  • ZYN Regular, formerly Slim: 14 mm wide, 34 mm long (ZYN UK site).
  • Skruf Super Slim Fresh White: 0.55 g per pouch, 30 per can (Skruf product page).
  • Skruf Superwhite Slim Fresh #2: 0.72 g per pouch, 24 per can (Skruf product page).

Format isn't strength

A format name says nothing about nicotine content. Because format changes pouch weight, it changes the per-pouch figure even when the label's mg/g stays the same. Skruf's own pages show it: the Super Slim product at 8 mg/g is listed at 4 mg per portion, and the Slim product at 8 mg/g is listed at 6 mg per portion. The mg/g matches, the amount in each pouch doesn't. It works the other way too: two pouches of the same format can differ a lot in strength. Skruf's Superwhite Slim Fresh #2 and #4 both weigh 0.72 g, but they are listed at 8 mg/g (6 mg per portion) and 18 mg/g (13 mg per portion).

Brands often pair formats with strength tiers in their own lineups. ZYN's UK page lists its Mini pouches at 1.5 mg, 3 mg and 6 mg and says its Regular range starts at 9 mg. That's a product-design choice by that brand, not a rule that mini means low or slim means high, and other brands can do it differently. To compare strength, use mg/g or mg per pouch, as set out in the strength guide.

Moisture, weight and can size vary too

Size isn't the only thing a format name can bundle. ZYN describes its Mini pouches as dry textured and its Regular pouches as "moist to the touch". Skruf's page for Super Slim Fresh White says that "white" in its range means the pouch is less moist and comes in super-slimmed portions ("White betyder att portionspåsen är mindre fuktig och i superslimmade portioner"). So a format word can stand for shape, moisture and weight at once, chosen by the brand.

Can weights show the same thing. Skruf lists the Super Slim can at 16.5 g for 30 pouches and the Slim can at 17.3 g for 24. The cans weigh about the same, but the superslim can holds six more pouches because each pouch is lighter.

A worked comparison

Using only figures from Skruf's own product pages, here is how two cans at the same mg/g come apart per pouch:

  • Super Slim Fresh White: 8 mg/g × 0.55 g = 4.4 mg per pouch. The page lists 4 mg per portion.
  • Superwhite Slim Fresh #2: 8 mg/g × 0.72 g = 5.76 mg per pouch. The page lists 6 mg per portion.
  • The slim pouch is about 1.3 times as heavy (0.72 ÷ 0.55), and at the same mg/g it holds about 1.3 times as much nicotine per pouch.
  • Neither the format name nor the mg/g alone would have told you that. You need the weight of one pouch.

Slim and mini in our catalogue

The products we list come in two formats, slim and mini. In our data, mini pouches typically come 24 to a can and slim pouches 20 to a can. Pouches per can aren't standard across the industry either: Skruf's slim range above is 24 per can and its superslim 30, so compare per-pouch figures rather than per-can ones.

Strength is shown on the site in mg/g, grouped into the site's own bands. You can browse the catalogue by brand and by strength band.

Comfort and fit

Fit is personal, and the format names don't predict it. If a pouch irritates your lip or gum, the lip comfort guide covers what's worth checking. If irritation persists, ask a health professional.

What to check when comparing formats

A short list that works across brands:

  • Treat the format name as a brand's own description, not a standard.
  • Look for a published weight or dimensions from the manufacturer, and don't assume two brands' "mini" match.
  • Compare strength with mg/g or mg per pouch, never with the format name.
  • Work out mg per pouch with mg/g × pouch weight in grams if only mg/g is shown.
  • Compare pouches per can separately from pouch size, since both vary.
